What Class Of E-Bike Should You Buy?

Electrical bikes are an incredible invention. They allow you to get some exercise while also using the electric motor to power along, as needed. People use them for running errands, getting to and from school, and even touring various cities. As you start to shop for an e-bike, one thing will become clear: there are lots of options! A good way to narrow down your choices is to first decide which class of e-bike is right for you. Handily, electric bikes are broken down into three classes.

Class One

Class 1 e-bikes are the most affordable and the most common. If a shop only carries one class of e-bike, this is usually it. What makes these bikes unique is how they work. You have to be pedaling for the motor to kick on. If you stop pedaling, the motor also stops. Class 1 e-bikes have a built-in speed limit if you will. They won't go above 20 miles per hour, at least not by way of the motor. You can pedal them faster than 20 miles per hour, but that's quite a feat, and most people won't do it for long if at all!

Class 1 e-bikes are usually allowed on most bike paths, bike lanes, and even some streets. They don't have any major drawbacks, other than the fact that you have to be pedaling for the bike to work.

Class Two

Class 2 e-bikes work similarly to class 1 e-bikes as long as you are pedaling. But they also have a separate setting with which you can use only the motor, and no pedal assist. So, if you feel tired and want to just sit there while the bike powers along, that's an option. If you want to pedal and get some exercise, that's an option, too. Class 2 e-bikes also top out at 20 miles per hour, and they're allowed everywhere. They can cost significantly more than a class 1 bike.

Class Three

Class 3 e-bikes are not too different from class 1 e-bikes, but they go faster. Most go up to 28 miles per hour, rather than the standard 20. You do have to keep pedaling for the bike to work, though! Class 3 e-bikes are great for anyone who rides on the road, as they make it easier to keep up with traffic. However, a lot of bike paths do not allow them since they're so speedy. The higher speed also means they're a bit more dangerous, assuming you do reach those top speeds.

Now that you know what each class has to offer, head out there and shop for the perfect e-bike.
